Baptist College Opens Door to Non-Baptist Christian Groups

The Baylor Board of Regents revised the university wide organizational religion policy on Friday, welcoming Christian groups in addition to Baptist ones to meet and be chartered at Baylor, according to the school news publication, The Lariat.

In an editorial on Tuesday, The Lariat applauded the "overdue" revision, noting that Methodists, Catholics and Presbyterians among other groups have been treated like "Christian step-children" for too long.

The revision will make the university "more welcoming" of other Christian organizations, Baylor University president John M. Lilley said, as reported by the student publication.

Baylor students had passed a bill early last year in an effort to grant non-Baptist Christian groups the same privileges as Baptist organizations on campus.

BEIJING (AP) — Thousands of people took to the streets of a southern Chinese town to protest plans to build a chemical plant there, citing health concerns, residents said Tuesday.

2008 Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellows announced

Two noted New Zealand authors have been announced joint winners of this year's Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship. Brigid Lowry and Paula Morris will each spend 5 months in the Sargeson Centre in Auckland, with Brigid taking up tenure in February, and Paula in August. Each fellow will also receive a $20,000 grant, allowing them to focus full time on their writing.

Brigid will use her time to complete a collection of poetry and to begin a novel for adults, while Paula plans to work on her fourth novel, Rangatira, inspired by the life of her ancestor, Paratene Te Manu. This year is the 21st anniversary of the award and the 11th year of Buddle Findlay's sponsorship of the fellowship. Buddle Findlay National Chairman, Peter Chemis, says the Sargeson Fellowship is about giving New Zealand writers the freedom to craft their stories.

I'm the Idiot Who Bought an HD-DVD Player

It's cool to hate PowerPoint. The program's critics say it encourages lazy thinking, oversimplifies complex issues, and replaces spontaneous discussion with robotic presentation. Information design poo-bah Edward Tufte believes he has traced the Columbia shuttle disaster to one poorly conceived slide. But the old-school presentation utility gets a bad rap. Blaming PowerPoint for lame presentations is like blaming a screechy, overlong Daily Kos post on the blogging software.

Let's recall that PowerPoint, derided by techies as an evil Microsoft plot, was originally a tool for the Mac. In 1981, computer researcher Whitfield Diffie used a computer to prepare his slides for a talk. His co-worker, Bob Gaskins, thought the idea had commercial potential, so a few years later he developed an application, called Presenter, for the new Apple Macintosh.

Rock's weird one reprised by son Dweezil

Dweezil Zappa, 37, is touring the world as lead guitarist with Zappa Plays Zappa, a tribute band bringing to public performance music that would otherwise be confined to recordings played on home sound systems.

Zappa died in 1993 at the age of 52 after releasing 80 albums of songs so challenging to play that pub bands don't cover them.

It takes amazing virtuosity to play a piece like Peaches en Regalia from 1969's Hot Rats album. "It's almost like being an athlete in top form to be able to play this stuff," Dweezil said.

Dweezil is centre stage through the three-hour concert. Two former Zappa sidemen - vocalist Ray White and guitarist Steve Vai - are guest artists with the six-member band.

On a big video screen Zappa himself appeared three times when the band played Sydney's Enmore Theatre.
