| ELECTION 2008: Fong best person for Batu Gajah, says DAP
IPOH: A desperate DAP is appealing to its incumbent Batu Gajah MP, Fong Po Kuan, to reconsider her decision not to defend her constituency this general election. DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said she was the best and most suitable person to represent Batu Gajah constituents and she was the only candidate proposed by the party.
"We want Fong to change her mind and contest in Batu Gajah as the party and voters still need her services," he said after meeting Perak DAP committee members yesterday.
On Sunday, Fong expressed her wish of not contesting in the coming election, citing internal problems as the cause.
She also recommended her party colleague, Pasir Pinji assemblyman Thomas Su Keong Siong to stand in her stead.
Asked about the issues raised by Fong, Guan Eng said they would have to meet her to determine her actual grouses.

[Until now, I had avoided satellite because I liked the idea of video-on-demand, and because I couldn't imagine life without NY1, a local all-news station that's exclusively on Time Warner Cable only available through Time Warner Cable and Cablevision. In reality, we hardly ever use VOD, and as for NY1 — well, life always has trade-offs, and I can always stream the audio from their website if I get really desperate.] The bottom line: For our first 12 months, we could pay $49.99 a month for virtually every station we receive today (it would go up to $69.99 a month after the first 12 months). On top of that, we would need to buy a $99 HD-DVR ($199, plus a $100 rebate), which at least on the surface, appears to blow away our current Scientific Atlanta box from Time Warner.

Letter to the editor/South: Century III Mall, Route 51 need help
You have got to be kidding me. ["Marketing manager says all is well at Century III Mall," letters, Jan. 24.] This mall is dim, spotted with shops that are quite questionable, boarded up stores and a few of the originals. It has gone downhill before my very eyes. It is a shame to let something like this die. Some incentive needs to be put out there for fresh, new stores to want to come to Century III Mall. And as for the Route 51 stretch that is so run down, garbage stacked, we need to start caring about that area. I would be all for getting a group together to try to make some improvements there. Moody's Cuts Thornburg Ratings
Thornburg had already paid off more than $300 million in margin calls before the latest round of margin calls were revealed Monday. Margin calls force borrowers to repay loans or put up more collateral to secure them. Thornburg said it will have to sell assets _ likely at a discount _ to raise enough cash to cover the margin calls. If it is unable to meet the calls, Thornburg said Monday it could hamper its ability to operate. Shares of Thornburg lost more than half their value Monday, falling $4.58, or 51.5 percent, to $4.32. Earlier in the session, shares hit an all-time low of $3.53. Thornburg's ratings remain on review for more downgrades.

Good news for injured Wood
PAUL Wood has revealed in his exclusive Warrington Guardian blog that tests have shown he suffered no major damage to his shoulder on Sunday. Wood was making his return against Catalans Dragons after a six-month lay-off following a shoulder reconstruction. But the forward had to leave the field just six minutes into his comeback, seemingly in agony after dislocating the same shoulder. Wood was rushed to Whiston Hospital and Wolves boss Paul Cullen said after the game that the injury 'didn't look good', amid fears that the Wiganer could face another long lay-off. But Wood went for tests yesterday, Monday, and reveals the outcome in his latest blog for the Warrington Guardian website before thanking fans for their support during the past two days.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A man opened fire at a Wendy's restaurant around lunchtime today, killing himself and one other person. Officials say they believe five people were shot overall. Several were carried away on stretchers to waiting ambulances. No other information is immediately available. .
